Convention
(To Grandma)
Convention will fail us, grandma dear
One of these days, as another birthday is drawing near
I hope I can manage with a proper wish
On something you no longer cherish
And if I can’t help wishing you
A happy birthday anyway
Just look at me in the eyes
And see what I dare not say

- An Argument I’ve oft been told by learned friars, That wishing and the crime are one, And Heaven punishes desires As much as if the deed were done. If wishing damns us, you and I Are damned to all our heart’s content; Come, then, at least we may enjoy Some pleasure for our punishment!...
- Child Margaret THE CHILD Margaret begins to write numbers on a Saturday morning, the first numbers formed under her wishing child fingers. The 6 and 9 […]...

- Poor Poet ‘A man should write to please himself,’ He proudly said. Well, see his poems on the shelf, Dusty, unread. When he came to my shop each day, So peaked and cold, I’d sneak one of his books away And say ’twas sold. And then by chance he looked below, And saw a stack Of his […]...
- Mountains of Delight The problem was the manner of choice (or whether there was a choice for that matter) As you had taken those options to yourself, Choosing as you had to do, and as it was right for you, There is no shame in that – and no reproving, But my alternatives were emptied by your doing.
