Animals Are Passing From Our Lives
It’s wonderful how I jog
On four honed-down ivory toes
My massive buttocks slipping
Like oiled parts with each light step.
I’m to market. I can smell
The sour, grooved block, I can smell
The blade that opens the hole
And the pudgy white fingers
That shake out the intestines
Like a hankie. In my dreams
The snouts drool on the marble,
Suffering children, suffering flies,
Suffering the consumers
Who won’t meet their steady eyes
For fear they could see. The boy
Who drives me along believes
That any moment I’ll fall
On my side and drum my toes
Like a typewriter or squeal
And shit like a new housewife
Discovering television,
Or that I’ll turn like a beast
Cleverly to hook his teeth
With my teeth. No. Not this pig.

- Other Lives And Dimensions And Finally A Love Poem My left hand will live longer than my right. The rivers of my palms tell me so. Never argue with rivers. Never expect your lives to finish at the same time. I think Praying, I think clapping is how hands mourn. I think staying up and waiting For paintings to sigh is science. In another […]...
- Colors Passing Through Us Purple as tulips in May, mauve Into lush velvet, purple As the stain blackberries leave On the lips, on the hands, The purple of ripe grapes Sunlit and warm as flesh. - The Story Of Our Lives 1 We are reading the story of our lives Which takes place in a room. The room looks out on a street. There is no one there, No sound of anything. The tress are heavy with leaves, The parked cars never move. We keep turning the pages, hoping for something, Something like mercy or change, […]...
- Passing Through Nobody in the widow’s household Ever celebrated anniversaries. In the secrecy of my room I would not admit I cared That my friends were given parties. - Not Fear Not fear. Maybe, out there somewhere, The possibility of fear; the wall That might tumble down, because it’s for sure That behind it is the sea. Not fear. Fear has a countenance; It’s external, concrete, Like a rifle, a shot bolt, A suffering child, Like the darkness that’s hidden In every human mouth. Not fear. […]...
- Little Owl Who Lives in the Orchard His beak could open a bottle, And his eyes – when he lifts their soft lids – Go on reading something Just beyond your shoulder – Blake, maybe, Or the Book of Revelation. - The Passing Of The Year My glass is filled, my pipe is lit, My den is all a cosy glow; And snug before the fire I sit, And wait to feel the old year go. - Love Lives Beyond The Tomb Love lives beyond the tomb, And earth, which fades like dew! I love the fond, The faithful, and the true. Love lives in sleep: ‘Tis happiness of healthy dreams: Eve’s dews may weep, But love delightful seems. ‘Tis seen in flowers, And in the morning’s pearly dew; In earth’s green hours, And in the heaven’s […]...
- Passing Breeze Yes, I know, this is nothing but thy love, O beloved of my heart – this golden light that dances upon the leaves, These idle clouds sailing across the sky, This passing breeze leaving its coolness upon my forehead. - The Animals They do not live in the world, Are not in time and space. From birth to death hurled No word do they have, not one To plant a foot upon, Were never in any place. For with names the world was called Out of the empty air, With names was built and walled, Line and […]...
- What do animals dream? Do they dream of past lives and unlived dreams Unspeakably human or unimaginably bestial?
