Distress Coils

Poem by Anne-Marie Derése, translated by Judith Skillman.

The waiting volcano inside us
Gnaws, digs, trembles,
Weighs its chances.
Distress coils up,
Shrinks silent like a sick beast.
We are unrecognizable,
Unique
In the certainty of our ferocity.
