Midsummer, Tobago

Broad sun-stoned beaches.

White heat.
A green river.

A bridge,
Scorched yellow palms

From the summer-sleeping house
Drowsing through August.

Days I have held,
Days I have lost,

Days that outgrow, like daughters,
My harbouring arms.
